Other Motorway Tunnels
Motorways are good fun to hide near, as they limit access to a site by car , if the competitors are tempted to use the motorway, or foot, as foot paths are limited. One example of this was an event for Mid-Thames, where Chris Plummer hid the transmitter 50’ from the M3 just by the old disused Basingstoke Canal. The hide was in dead bracken and modest conifer trees, with a wire out along the wood fence of the M’way. About 50 yards from the TX site, there was a tunnel under the M’way, with a stinking mud filled sump at the near side. Being somewhat evil, Chris decided to extend the wire through the tunnel and put out most of its length down the opposite side of the carriageways. Not satisfied with that he purposely placed a large plastic sack filled with bracken to simulate the operator, in the middle of the tunnel, to tempt competitors to crawl in. Some did take the bait, beat up the sack , crawl on and fall in the mud cess pit at the end. Much to the amusement of others and the organiser. Some competitors actually found the sack retreated and ran across both carriageways, but most walked the 300 yards to a proper road bridge across the M3.
